A plain-English guide to grab lorries, how they work, and when grab hire beats a skip every time.
Grab hire — also called grab lorry hire or grab truck hire — is a waste removal and material delivery service using a lorry fitted with a large hydraulic grabbing arm. The arm extends from the back of the vehicle and can reach over walls, fences, and obstacles to collect material without the truck needing to enter your site.
It's one of the most efficient ways to clear large volumes of soil, rubble, hardcore, and construction waste from a site — and it's far faster and cheaper than using skips for anything above a few tonnes.
A grab lorry is a standard heavy-goods vehicle with a hydraulic clamshell grab crane mounted on the rear. The driver positions the lorry at the kerbside or site entrance, then operates the grab arm by remote or from the cab. The grab opens, clamps onto the material, lifts it over, and drops it into the body of the lorry. A full load of 10–12 tonnes can be collected in 15–30 minutes.
Once full, the lorry heads to a licenced waste transfer station or aggregate yard. If you need aggregate delivered as well as waste removed, many grab lorries can also tip aggregate on the return journey — making it a highly efficient two-way service.
What grab hire cannot take: hazardous materials including asbestos, contaminated soil, or liquid waste. If you're unsure, call us and we'll advise.
For small domestic jobs (a single patio, a garage clearance), a skip is usually fine. For anything involving groundworks, landscaping, construction waste, or more than 3–4 tonnes of material, grab hire wins on every measure:
| Factor | Grab Hire | Skip Hire |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per tonne | ✔ Lower for large volumes | ✘ Higher at scale |
| Speed | ✔ 1 load in 30 mins | ✘ Multiple collections needed |
| Access | ✔ Arm reaches over obstacles | ✘ Skip must be placed on site |
| Permit required | ✔ No permit needed (kerbside) | ✘ Permit if on public road |
| Capacity | ✔ 10–12 tonnes per load | ✘ 6–8 tonnes (large skip) |
| Hire period charges | ✔ None — collect and go | ✘ Daily hire rate after first period |
